WhatsApp will continue to function as a messaging service even when the internet is down.
A service that allows for instant messaging Users of WhatsApp now has the option to connect using proxy servers, allowing them to continue communicating online even if they are unable to access the internet due to censorship or other restrictions.
The massive technology company, which is owned by Meta, expressed its wish that power outages such as those that occurred in Iran “never occur” again.
They violated human rights and “stopped individuals from getting needed treatment.”
WhatsApp has issued a call to action to its worldwide community, asking for volunteers to act as proxies in order to assist users in their ability to “communicate freely.” The company has also said that it would provide instructions on how to create proxies.
According to a blog post on the company’s website, “Connecting through proxy ensures the same high degree of privacy and security that WhatsApp delivers.”
“Your personal communications will still be safeguarded by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that they do not become available to anybody in between you and the person with whom you are conversing. This includes the proxy servers, WhatsApp, and Meta.”
According to Juras Jurnas, a representative from the proxy and online data collection company Oxylabs, who spoke with BBC News, “for the WhatsApp users with some government restrictions on internet access, like we have seen previously in Iran, utilization of a proxy server can enable people to maintain a connection to WhatsApp and the rest of the free, uncensored internet.”
“It will make it possible for individuals all over the globe to remain connected to the internet even in the event that their internet connection is banned by certain malevolent actors.”
